The Metabolic Protocol
What worked at 35 will not work at 45. Your biology changed. Your strategy has to change with it.

The Mechanism (Why It's Happening)
The midlife metabolic shift is not a failure of willpower. It is a direct result of hormonal recalibration. As estrogen declines, your body's sensitivity to insulin changes. You become less efficient at processing carbohydrates and more prone to storing fat, particularly visceral fat around the midsection.
Simultaneously, the hormonal changes accelerate the loss of lean muscle mass (sarcopenia). Muscle is metabolically active tissue; losing it slows your basal metabolic rate. This means you are burning fewer calories at rest while simultaneously becoming more insulin resistant. This is the “metabolic mutiny” of midlife.
The Core Strategy
You cannot out-cardio this shift. The strategy must shift from calorie restriction to metabolic optimization. This requires three pillars:
- Protein Prioritization: To arrest muscle loss and stabilize blood sugar.
- Resistance Training: To build metabolically active muscle tissue.
- Insulin Management: Strategic carbohydrate timing and quality.
The Protocol
The information on this page is drawn from published research and the author's personal experience. It is not medical advice. Please discuss any changes to your health protocol with a qualified physician.
Tier 1: The Nutritional Foundation
Hitting protein targets is the non-negotiable first step; commonly cited clinical targets range from 1.2 to 1.8 grams per kilogram — worth confirming with a clinician. When whole food isn't enough, high-quality supplementation is required.
Tier 1 · The Nutritional Foundation
Momentous Essential Protein
Our preferred clean, third-party tested isolate.
Tier 2: Metabolic Flexibility & Fasting
For some women, structured fasting protocols can help reset insulin sensitivity. However, aggressive fasting can also increase cortisol, which is already erratic in perimenopause. A guided, mimetic approach is often safer.
Tier 2 · Metabolic Flexibility & Fasting
ProLon Fasting Mimetic Protocol
A clinically tested 5-day program that provides the cellular benefits of fasting while providing nourishment.
Tier 3: Tracking & Data
You cannot manage what you do not measure. Tracking your sleep architecture, recovery, and activity levels provides the data needed to adjust your metabolic strategy.
Tier 3 · Tracking & Data
Oura Ring
One of the most validated wearables for tracking sleep stages and physiological stress recovery.

When DIY Stops Being Strategic
You've tracked it. You've changed the obvious things. You're still waking at 3 AM, forgetting words, white-knuckling rage. This is where clinical evaluation belongs in the conversation.
